The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might, it cannot rescue. Psalm 33:17
I’m guessing that none of you own an actual war horse that you depend on for salvation. But I’m also guessing that many of you do indeed have a “war horse” or two that you depend on for salvation. Confused yet? Let me explain. Years ago, I coached a middle school volleyball team to a state championship. Honestly, I think the boys knew more about volleyball than I did. Each player contributed in huge ways throughout the state tournament. However, I think every player on the team would agree that we indeed had a “war horse” of a player on our team that we depended on.
Throughout the season this young man learned how to become a team leader. He could also hit a volleyball harder than any middle school boy I had ever met. We knew that if we could get him set up, he would leave a dent on the floor on the other side of the net. In sports, we depend on our star players when the game is on the line. But what about in life? What about my brokenness and sin? What about my hope for eternal salvation? What about when cancer invades, relationships crumble, and loved ones die? What can I depend on to save me when I can’t save myself?
It’s tempting to trust in the “war horses” of money, status, job security, healthy living, self-discipline, ability, personality, and even family and friends. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad thing to have these “war horses” in your stable. They are a gift – But they are a false hope for salvation. There is no war horse that can save us! God is the only One who saves, and He does it in and through Jesus! Jesus has conquered sin, death, and the devil. Jesus has risen from the dead. God forgives your sin, makes you His child, and grants you eternal life in and through Jesus!
