Connected in The Word 8-6-25

Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! Luke 12:24

I have spent most of my adult life working with children.  I’ve worked as a camp counselor, a church youth director, and a classroom teacher.  Even now as a pastor I spend a tremendous amount of time with children whether I am visiting a classroom in our school, leading a chapel, or teaching a confirmation class.  In a world where our children are hearing so many things that are NOT TRUE, I think it is vitally important that Christian adults tell our children the TRUTH!

One of the truths that we Christians must tell children is that they are VALUABLE!  You might be thinking that this doesn’t sound like a particularly “Christian” idea.  After all, doesn’t the world tell children they are valuable all the time?  The world might tell SOME children that they are valuable, but often their “value” is contingent on their accomplishments, their level of cuteness, or their good behavior.  The world might even tell children that they are valuable because of who they are.  But if there is one thing I have learned about children over the years it is that they are not stupid.  If we tell them they are valuable because of who they are, their first question is – Who Am I?

This is the precise moment that Christians get to speak the glorious TRUTH into the ears and hearts of children.  Children are valuable because of WHO THEY ARE IN CHRIST!  I love telling children that they are valuable because they were MADE & SAVED by God in and through Jesus!  They are valuable because God MADE them.  They are SO VALUABLE that God SAVED them from sin, death, and the devil through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus!  The world might tell children they are valuable, but we get to tell children WHY THEY ARE MORE VALUABLE than the ravens, the lilies, and the grasses of the field.
