Connected in The Word 8-26-25
One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. Luke 14:1
The Pharisees were always watching Jesus. Some were curious and others were looking to accuse Him. Do you ever feel like people are watching you? In grade school I didn’t think anyone was watching me. In middle school I thought everyone was watching me. In high school I wished more people were watching me. In college I hoped that no one was watching me. As an adult, I don’t really care who is watching me.
But what’s the real answer? Are people watching us? I would suggest that most people are not watching us! This is a world filled with egocentric people so busy looking at themselves that they have no time to watch anyone else. However, there are times in life when people are watching us. The people watching us are the people in relationship with us through our various vocations in life. Our family, friends, coworkers, and teammates are watching us. There are also moments in life when things are stressful, dangerous, confusing, and chaotic. In these moments I think people (even strangers) are also watching us. Finally, if people know that you are a Christian, then there’s a pretty good chance they will be watching you for the same reasons they were watching Jesus. Some may only want to accuse, but some may be curious about the hope and joy you possess.
There is of course another who is always watching you. Your Heavenly Father has His eyes fixed on you. He’s not curious (He knows everything about you), and He’s not looking to accuse you (though He may discipline you in love). Your God sees your hurts, brokenness, and sin and He still loves you. He sees you when no one is watching you and when everyone is watching you. He sees you for what you are – A sinner, forgiven and redeemed by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus!
