Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. Luke 12:51
I’m confused! Jesus (The Prince of Peace) did not come to bring peace on earth, but rather division? It’s no wonder people think the Bible is confusing. So, what’s the deal – Does Jesus bring peace or division? The answer is YES! (I know, even more confusing)
Let me try to explain. God put on flesh in and through Jesus to redeem all of creation. The message was clear – Repent and Believe the Good News that Jesus lived, died, and rose for you! For those who have ears to hear this Good News, they do indeed experience the joy, forgiveness, and peace that has been given to them in and through Jesus. By PEACE I mean reconciliation with God and all believers. This is a glorious peace that transcends all understanding. By PEACE I also most definitely DON’T MEAN that everyone in the world is going to rejoice and be happy about the message that Jesus came for sinners.
Rejoicing in the Good News that Jesus lived, died, and rose from the dead for all people is honestly not a popular position in this broken and sinful world. Believing in Jesus, loving others in the Name of Jesus, and faithfully fulfilling your vocations in life to the glory of God and for the benefit of your neighbor will make some people hate you, want nothing to do with you, and possibly even persecute you. So, does Jesus bring peace or division? The answer really is – YES!
