Connected in The Word 5-28-26

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

God created Adam and Eve in His image.  What does that mean?  The truth is we can’t 100% say exactly what it means and it’s ok to say that.  The best part about being a Missouri Synod Lutheran pastor is that sometimes “I don’t know” is the best and most faithful answer.

However, Scripture does give us some hints.  Being made in the Image of God meant that Adam and Eve were different than the animals.  Being made in God’s image had a relational aspect to it.  God’s relationship with Adam and Eve was not like His relationship with the rest of creation.  The relationship He had with Adam and Eve was so intimate and holy that God would work through them to care for creation and love people.  God is holy and He designed people to be His Holy Image Bearers in creation.

But then came sin!  Adam and Eve chose to “step out” of this Divine Relationship.  They chose to set aside God’s Image.  The consequences for Adam and Eve and all of creation were devastating.  All people are born with sin which separates them from God.  Yes, this is a deadly condition.  But here is the Gospel – Jesus (GOD IN THE FLESH) was the exact image of the invisible God (Col. 1:15).  He lived, died, and rose to redeem all of creation.  My life, as a believer in Jesus, has been hidden IN HIM and my relationship with God has been restored.  Before God I am holy because I bear the image of Christ.  Not only is my life hidden in Christ, but Christ now lives in me.  When my life reflects the Image of God, it’s because Christ is at work through me.  When my life doesn’t look very “Godly” it’s because in my sin I sometimes step out of the Divine relationship God has established with me.  So, what does it mean to be made in the image of God?  I can’t wait to find out someday when Christ returns!
