Connected in The Word 2-24-26

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“We need to hear the Gospel every day, because we forget it every day.” – Martin Luther

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Use It or Lose It.”  I once knew Greek well enough to pass a Greek test, but I haven’t used it in a while and so I wouldn’t do so well on the same test today.  I think this could be said of relationships as well.  I wouldn’t forget an old high school friend I hadn’t spoken to in 35 years was still my friend, but the relationship would be different than it was because I haven’t cultivated that relationship.

Our Lenten sermon series, “Whatever You Do” is all about vocation.  Vocation is all about how God works through us to love others and care for creation as we faithfully fulfill our duties and callings in life.  However, you must never forget that the foundational piece of the doctrine of vocation is that God has called you by the Gospel, forgiven all your sin, and made you His child in and through Jesus!  It is a glorious Truth that God works THROUGH YOU, but please don’t forget that God first works IN YOU!

As a Christian who still struggles with my sinful nature, I can forget and even reject the Good News of John 3:16 (Being a pastor doesn’t make me immune to this).  Forgetting the Good News that Jesus lived, died, and rose for me would be a problem.  I need to be reminded of the Gospel every day!  That’s why I read my Bible, say my prayers, and go to church. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THESE THINGS BECAUSE I AM A PASTOR!  I do these things because, like everyone else, I need to be reminded of the Gospel every day!
