Connected in The Word 2-23-26
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
There’s a stretch of road near where I live that not long ago had the speed limit reduced from 45mph to 35mph. If you are local, I’m talking about Orth Road just east of the soccer fields. There are three reasons why I’m going to get a ticket on that stretch of road someday. First, I’m a creature of habit and I’ve spent 18 years going 45mph on that stretch of road. Second, I’m forgetful. You could tell me 20 times that the speed limit has been reduced and I still forget. Third, I still think it’s stupid that the speed limit is now 35mph and sometimes my rebellious spirit decides 45mph is just fine.
Being a creature of habit, being forgetful, and being a little rebellious gets me in trouble in my faith life as well. I know that God has called me to be His own, forgiven all my sin, and given me New Life in Jesus. But I’m a creature of habit – I’ve been sinning for over 52 years. I’m forgetful – You can tell me 100 times that my sins are forgiven in Christ, and sometimes I still forget. And of course, I still struggle with my rebellious sinful nature – Sometimes I decide to sin.
Last weekend in worship we began our “Whatever You Do” Lenten Series on Vocation. We were reminded of two things – God works through us to love others and care for creation (vocation), but that sin still pollutes our vocations every day. This weekend our theme shifts to Whatever You Do: You are Born Again! When sin enters our vocations, our hearts, and our lives, I believe the first thing we need to hear is the Gospel of John 3:16. A word of Law might convict us of sin, temporarily stop sin, and may even cause us to regret our sin. Sometimes this is appropriate and needed. But the only thing that can truly change me is the Gospel. So, if you are believer struggling with sin in your various vocations in life – Hear this Good News: Whatever You Do: You Are Born Again (in Christ) – John 3:16 is still for you!
