Connected in The Word 2-11-26

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

“Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus!”

Doing something “in the name of” another person is not something you choose to do.  To do something in the name of another person, that person must choose you to speak in their name.  When I taught 3rd grade, it was a common occurrence for me to choose one of my students to speak and act in my name.  I might send a student to the school office with a message, or to the print room to make a couple copies of a worksheet.  Doing something “in the name of” Mr. Richard was one of the most exciting things to do for my students.

In all my years of teaching, I’ve never had a student who did not do what I asked them to do in my name.  I’m guessing if I taught middle school or high school it might be a different story, but I never had a 3rd grader give the wrong message to the school office in my name or decide to make copies of their face (instead of the worksheet) in my name.  Doing something in the name of your teacher was a big deal, an incredible privilege, and something you had to be chosen to do.

We have been called to speak and act in the name of Jesus.  That’s not something we chose to do.  God chose us to do that.  Jesus commissioned us to be His ambassadors.  It’s a big deal to speak and act in the name of Jesus.  It’s a privilege to speak and act in the name of Jesus.  We get to speak and act in the name of Jesus because we have been chosen to do so.  In the waters of Baptism, God placed His name on you.  So, in WHATEVER YOU DO today – Do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus!
