Connected in The Word 11-3-25
There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, and they asked him a question… Luke 20:27-28a
You might be thinking, “Hey Pastor, you forgot to include the question the Sadducees asked Jesus in the verse above. Isn’t that important?” Well, yes and no. Every word in Scripture is important, but in this case it’s most important to understand the TYPE of question they were asking and their INTENTIONS in asking the question. If I had included the question, you would see that they were asking a question about what life would be like in the New Creation at the Resurrection of the Dead. But here’s the problem, THE SADDUCEES DENY THAT THERE IS A RESURRECTION! Their purpose was to trap Jesus with a question He couldn’t answer.
I always encourage people to ask questions whether they are sitting in class at school, talking to a doctor at the hospital, or participating in a Bible study at church. Questions are always good. There are no dumb questions. Sometimes our questions come from a place of curiosity, other times from a place of frustration, and still other times from a place of sadness, despair, or even anger. These are all good questions – And you should ask them!
Over the past several days, we’ve had three unexpected deaths of people in our congregation or related to people in our congregation. Parents have lost children, children have lost parents, spouses have lost partners, and brothers and sisters have lost siblings. We’ve all lost friends. There are always lots of questions when people die unexpectedly. It’s ok to ask those questions – It’s part of the grieving process. As believers in Jesus, we get to ask our “death” questions in the context of the Resurrection! Death is the consequence of sin. We were never meant to die. THAT’S WHY JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD – SO THAT WE TOO MIGHT RISE FROM DEATH!
