Connected in The Word 11-18-25
He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14
In 2018, 12 young boys and their soccer coach from Thailand were 2.5 miles into a cave when unexpected rains trapped them inside. A couple of years ago I watched a National Geographic documentary (The Rescue) about this event. I highly recommend it. The story is truly amazing. The boys and their coach were stuck in the cold and dark for 9 days before anyone reached them, and it took an additional 9 days to rescue the boys and their coach. One diver lost his life in the operation and another diver died a year later due to a blood infection he contracted in the cave.
Since the cave was flooded in several locations the rescue involved swimming underwater with low visibility for hours and squeezing through tiny openings wearing diving equipment. After much deliberation it was decided that the best way to prevent the boys from panicking underwater was to sedate them as an experienced diver transferred them from the darkness of the cave to life in the light. It was truly an amazing rescue.
This rescue reminds me of another Rescue. You and I were once trapped not in the darkness of a mountain cave, but in the even deeper and more terrifying darkness of sin. We could do nothing to free ourselves. But because of God’s great love for us, He became a man in the person of Jesus, and dove into the depths of our sin to rescue us. He bore our sin on the cross and rose from the dead to conquer sin, death, and the devil. Just like those boys were drawn into the waters and delivered to life in the light – We too were drawn into the waters of Baptism and delivered to Life in The Light. You have been rescued, and your Rescuer is Jesus!
