Connected in The Word 11-17-25

He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14

Have you ever had to be rescued?  That seems like a simple question with a simple yes or no answer.  It may be a simple question, but I would suggest that how you answer that question significantly speaks to your self-awareness and your relationship with Jesus.

Let’s just say your simple answer is “NO”!  You can boldly declare that you have never had to be rescued.  First, I would suggest that you are not very self-aware.  After all, we all had to be rescued daily by a parent or another adult for the first several years of our life.  To say that you’ve never had to be rescued is to say that you’ve never needed mercy and never needed grace of any kind.  Second, if you truly believe you’ve never had to be rescued then seeing Jesus as your Savior is probably something you have a hard time wrapping your head around.  Why would you need a Savior if you’ve never had to be rescued.

But let’s say your answer (like mine) is “YES”!  I can boldly declare that I need rescuing all the time.  I could give you concrete examples, but really, I need rescuing every day.  When I look in the mirror, I see a man who doesn’t just admire acts of mercy and grace, but one who owes his entire life to acts of mercy and grace.  That’s not self-depravation – That’s just reality.  Therefore, when I read and hear of a Savior Jesus who rescues me from the power of darkness, forgives my sin, and showers me with mercy and grace, I don’t try to wrap my head around it.  Instead, I just believe His promises, rejoice in the forgiveness of sins, and share His mercy and grace with others.  If you need rescuing – Jesus is your Savior!
