As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. 2 Thessalonians 3:13
I have met many people who “do not grow weary in doing good.” The good they do is out of love for their neighbor and in response to God’s love for them. The “good” they do brings glory God and is a great benefit to their neighbor. This happens when a mom feeds her baby, a nurse cleans a wound, and when a soldier serves their country (Happy Veterans Day). It happens in many ways every day. I saw it happen again this past weekend.
Saturday, we had a large memorial service and luncheon at church. It required many people to “not grow weary in doing good.” When most people were enjoying their Saturday, I saw four of our elders spend the entire day setting things up, directing traffic, running sound systems, answering questions, helping people, and then cleaning up when it was all done. I saw a group of people faithfully set up and prepare lunch for well over 100 people. I saw friends of the family in mourning prepare snacks, watch kids, and take care of details throughout the day so the mourning family didn’t need to worry about it. There were people who helped with music, put together worship folders, and brought in LCC Comfort Dogs for the event.
Some of the people mentioned above do this every time there is a funeral or memorial service at Immanuel. I am tremendously blessed by so many of God’s people who “do not grow weary in doing good.” What motivates these people to keep “doing good” even when they may be very weary themselves? It’s not to earn God’s favor or to win points towards salvation. Jesus took care of both of those things. I think they do good because they know this glorious Truth: God never grows weary of loving, forgiving, and sustaining them.
