Connected in The Word 11-10-25
As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. 2 Thessalonians 3:13
Sometimes I grow weary of my dog barking, my back hurting, and my car breaking down. I grow weary when I haven’t slept well, have a cold, or feel misunderstood. I grow weary of the cold weather, dark skies, and that white stuff on the ground here in northern Illinois. Many of you deal with far more “weary worthy” things than I do. Some of you have grown weary of cancer treatments, addictions, depression, mourning and broken relationships. It’s easy to grow weary in a broken world.
I like to complain about my dog, my back, and winter weather. But what “wearies” more than anything else is my own brokenness and sin. I can relate with Paul in Romans 7 when he says that the good he wants to do, he doesn’t do, and the evil he doesn’t want to do, that he still does. The most wearisome thing in my life is ME! The temptation here is to stop trying. But Paul (who was very weary of his sin) says don’t stop! Don’t grow weary of doing good. But why? Why not stop if I am going to continue to struggle every day?
We don’t grow weary of doing good, because it is God doing the good through us. Philippians 2:13 says it this way, “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” The sin in my life is ALL ME, but the good in my life is ALL GOD! So, I daily confess my sin and brokenness, and I daily rejoice in God’s promise to have good use of me as His child! There will be things in life that cause us to grow weary. But we don’t grow weary of doing good, because we’re not the ones doing the good. God is doing good through you as you love your spouse, pay your bills, and pray for your grandkids. God never wearies of doing good through you! “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Cor. 12:9
