Connected in The Word 10-9-25
Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!
2 Timothy 2:8-9
There are all kinds of “chains” that can bind us in this life as we look to share God’s Word. However, this Word of God, which has at its center the Gospel message that Jesus lived, died, and rose from the dead – CAN NEVER BE CHAINED! As a disciple of Jesus, you will bear chains, burdens, and crosses as you receive God’s Gifts, share God’s Love, and use your God given gifts to His glory and for the good of your neighbor. As Paul writes to Timothy (from prison), he wants him to remember “Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David”. The message of God’s Word never changes no matter the situation.
God’s Word was applied to you in the waters of Baptism. God placed His Name on you and declared you to be His child – Sins forgiven and set free from death and the devil. As you live your life as one of the redeemed – You will face hardships, trials, and yes eventually even physical death. But the Word of God spoken into your ears, applied to you in Baptism, placed in your mouth at the Supper, and absorbed by your eyes as you read your Bible will not be bound by anything!
There are times when I am discouraged by my own sinful struggles, a world that rejects and misrepresents the church, and all kinds of other chains that sometimes make me wonder – What’s the point? Does anything I do really make any difference in God’s Kingdom? At those times it is good for me to read Paul’s words above. There are all kinds of “chains” that can bind us in this life – But the Word of God, the Gospel message that Jesus lived, died, and rose from the dead – CAN NEVER BE CHAINED!
