Connected in The Word 10-17-25

And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Luke 18:7a

Who or what do you run to when things don’t look good?  When you lose heart, who or what do you cling to?  Martin Luther would suggest that your “god” is whoever or whatever you run to in those times.  When life gets rough do you run to “unhealthy” things like alcohol, drugs, or other fleshly comforts?  When your stress level rises do you run to “healthy” things like a friend, a walk outside, or a counselor?  Luther doesn’t care if the things you run to are healthy or unhealthy – He’s just pointing out that your “god” is whatever you run to for comfort in distress.

Please don’t get me wrong, I highly recommend talking to a trusted loved one, going for a walk, or even seeking professional help when life becomes overwhelming.  These are GOOD CHOICES, and God can pour out His mercy upon you through them.  But the question remains, when you lose heart, when all hope is lost, and when you have reached the absolute end of your road – Who do you cry out to?  When the night is dark, when the sin is deep, and when the brokenness of the world becomes overwhelming – Who do you cry out to?  When nothing else and no one else can numb your pain – Who do you cry out to?

Cry out to God!  God loves you dearly.  Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus you are His child.  He hears your cries.  He sees your pain.  He forgives your sin.  God doesn’t promise to give us health, wealth, or even happiness (at least not the way the world understands it).  Instead, He promises steadfast love, eternal faithfulness, abundant mercy and grace, a peace that surpasses all understanding, deep joy, and best of all forgiveness, redemption, and New Life in and through Jesus!  So, if you are at the end of your road, or even if you’ve got miles of wide-open road ahead of you – Cry out to God in and through Jesus!
