I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Luke 18:8a

Does God really give justice SPEEDILY?  I’m guessing there have been times in your life when you’ve wondered if God was even listening.  I’d bet many of you have pleaded for justice and yet feel like it has not come.  Maybe you have begun to feel like God is an unjust judge who could care less about you and in no rush to help you.  Even the introduction to this parable that Jesus gives doesn’t seem to fit with the assertion that God gives justice speedily.  Jesus tells the parable to encourage His disciples to keep on praying and to not lose heart.  If God acts speedily – Why would they need a pep talk about praying and not losing heart?

There’s a lot to unpack here so let me use just one simply example to illustrate God’s “speedy” justice for His elect who cry out to him day and night.  I go to God with all kinds of different prayers.  However, there is one prayer I pray every day (there are several I pray every day – but that’s for a different devotion).  Every day I ask God to forgive my sin – EVERY SINGLE DAY!  Sometimes it ends up being multiple times a day.  When I ask God to forgive my sin, I am essentially asking Him to give me justice.  If that sounds confusing – Keep reading!

Why do we ask God to forgive us (give us justice)?  Why are we, as dirty rotten sinners, so bold to ask for forgiveness (justice) from a Righteous and Holy God?  If God is just, shouldn’t I be crushed and condemned for my sin?  Who am I to cry out day and night for forgiveness (justice)?  I AM ONE OF GOD’S ELECT!  I am one for who Jesus died.  I am one who has been drawn into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.  I am one of the Baptized, Redeemed, and Forgiven!  I can cry out to God for forgiveness (justice) because God has PROMISED to give it me in and through Jesus!  When I pray for forgiveness (justice), I’m just asking God to keep His promises.  When I pray for forgiveness (justice), God does not delay in delivering it.  God delights in showering His elect with His mercy, forgiveness, and yes – Justice!  He does it Abundantly, Superfluously, and SPEEDILY!
