Connected in The Word 1-28-26
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18
There are people in the world that think Christianity is foolishness because they say it just doesn’t make any sense. They may even invoke science in defense of their position. I always find this a bit humorous because the deeper we dig into science the more evidence there is of a Creator. There is nothing in the universe that can disprove God’s existence (every true scientist will confess that). Once we get past the ridiculous “science disproves Christianity” part of the conversation and begin to dig a little deeper, I think we discover the part of Christianity that seems most foolish to those who actively reject it. What’s the true “folly” of Christianity according to the rest of the world? It’s JESUS ON THE CROSS!
Talk about crazy! The Creator of the universe becomes one of His creatures and then SERVES THEM by paying for their sin through His suffering and dying on the cross! I think deep down this is what seems most foolish to those that actively reject Christianity. Of course some will still claim they reject Christianity because of science, the hypocrisy of Christians, or because they have chosen a different god (usually themselves). However, if you take time to get to know these people, talk to these people, and listen to these people – You will find that it is Jesus SERVING US by dying on the cross for our sins (and theirs) that they find most foolish.
So why do I share all this today when our Mission Pillar of the week is SERVE GENEROUSLY? It’s because Serving Generously is a great way to bring the Gospel Word of the Cross to people who think the cross is complete foolishness. If I am going to share the Gospel with my neighbor, and if I want them to understand that God loves them and serves them through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and through His glorious resurrection, then one thing I can do is to love them and serve them. When Serving Generously accompanies the proclamation of Christ crucified and risen – Don’t be surprised when you see the power of God at work!
