Connected in The Word 1-14-26

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). John 1:40-41

I think all people enjoy sharing good news.  Last week I was driving to St. Louis, and I got a video call from my oldest son Caleb and his girlfriend Allie to share the good news that they were engaged.  I could tell they really enjoyed telling me the good news.  Over the last several days I too have enjoyed sharing this good news with people I know and even people I don’t know.  It’s fun to share good news.

In this week’s Gospel reading Andrew has some good news to share.  The first person he decides to share it with is his brother Simon (who we all know as Peter).  But this wasn’t just any good news.  Andrew was sharing the GOOD NEWS that Christ the promised Messiah had arrived.  This is eternal GOOD NEWS that we still get to share today.  I really enjoy sharing this GOOD NEWS because it is GOOD NEWS for all people (not just me).  This GOOD NEWS changes lives.  Just look at what it did for Simon/Peter!

It is God who makes disciples through the power of the Spirit working through the Word.  Faith in Jesus is a Gift that comes to us through Word & Sacrament.  But once God “Disciples” us into Christ, He uses us to “Disciple” others into Christ.  It’s still God doing the Discipling, and He still does it through Word & Sacrament, but He also draws forgiven sinners like you and me into that discipling work.  You and I have some really GOOD NEWS to share.  Let’s share it!
